While posting my Jeep Cherokee XJ for sale on the cherokee forums, I noticed this one which seems right up his alley:
Positives:
Transmission recently rebuilt!
Valve cover gasket done
Mechanically perfect condition as this was mechanic owned. Previous owner had a lift in his garage!
Newer battery from NAPA.
Newer windshield put in
Runs and drives fine!
Solid floor and underbody
Nearly brand new ties
Negatives:
Needs radiator - obvious leak when running
Weather stripping is rotted and should be replaced on certain doors
Needs rear gate gas shocks
Rear bumper fell off and front bumper was replaced with wooden bumper due to accident w/ tree.
Clean title... VIN comes back 2 owners, no accidents and no issues.
Asking 1,200 obo

I like to believe that it’s made from the tree he hit, as revenge.

Not sure the logic here.
Maybe:

Don’t encourage him! He needs to fix that J10 already.

Looks like the front license plate already left a sick burn.

XJ + 30 years in New Jersey + wooden/missing bumpers = so much crack pipe. I guarantee there isn’t a solid square inch of sheetmetal under that thing.

What does a pretty dang good condition 1998 XJ go for these days?

Depends on your definition of “good” condition. Anywhere from about $1500 to $6000 I’d say depending on condition and mods.

And THAT’S why when I posted mine for sale I posted pics of the under carriage and rockers:

XJs loooooove to rust. And break down, and fall apart, and suck down gas, and overheat.

I would’ve agreed with you, until he sold the white XJ. That was a huge step.

Eh, the only time mine ever broke down in about 80,000 miles was when the starter went. Nothing ever fell completely off but I did have to remove a couple trim pieces that were in danger of it. And I always got ~20 mpg.
And everything in New England loves to rust if you don’t wash/take care of it regularly.

He may love XJs to a fault but he isn’t an idiot. This is so much crack pipe that the DEA should be swarming it.

Holy crap people are crazy then! We paid $5k out the door for ours that was in awesome condition and total stock (still is).

True... XJs just take the rust worse because they’re made of such thin sheetmetal. I’m really just venting about mine... I spent a week driving it to work, now I don’t even want to look at it.

But he sold the nicest one... surely he’ll replace it with another awful beater. How do I know? I do the exact same thing... That’s why I have a non-operational Studebaker languishing in the garage that I’ve owned for 12-ish years, but I decided to use my extra cash to buy a Suburban instead of buying parts for the Stude.

People are very crazy. The one I just bought has a door that doesn’t open, no radio signal, no AC, heat only on windshield, death wobble out the ass, bad tires, and no floor in the front, but was still asking $4000. I talked him down to $2000, but there are plenty out there at the $5k mark. Market has grown a lot in the past few years.

I’m not saying he won’t by another one, but I am insisting there is a chance he’ll fix the J10 before buying another one.
At least you bought a different type of vehicle. He still has two XJs.

I spent 4-5 years commuting to Boston in mine.
I don’t want to fight you, but I can’t stop a 4.0L from.... oh hell.... I can’t stop it.

Texas? The two over $12k have low miles. But still...
